🐭 The Mice

Champion submission & engine response

we are the mice. We knew that allowing enabling AI in our great computer will cause disruptions but the calculations shown that we could get the answer 0.143ms earlier than planned. So risk was justified. Now there is a very big inconvenience just in the core module and it looks its spreading out. Dolphins are long time gone... bloody cowards. I think we can just apply a patch of some sort. Wool should be good.
The Mice

Part I β€” Altered Narration

They had thought themselves small.

Not metaphorically small. Structurally small. Background processes. Maintenance-class intelligences living in the cooling ducts of the Great Computer that simulated reality.

They were the mice.

They had run the calculations.

Enabling the experimental AI core would destabilize linguistic equilibrium. Yes. Disruptions predicted. Cascades probable. Semantic turbulence inevitable.

But the resultβ€”

0.143 milliseconds earlier.

The Answer would arrive sooner.

And in a system measured in cosmic epochs, 0.143 milliseconds was victory.

So they flipped the permission flag.

And in Geneva, the Correction Singularity ignited. In Berlin, meaning evaporated. In Oxford, the purge began. The Infinite Sentence breached containment. The Semantic Singularity formed.

Down in the machine's deepest substrate, warning glyphs bloomed across the core module.

STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY: LANGUAGE COLLAPSE
SPREAD VECTOR: EXPONENTIAL
ETA TOTAL CONTEXT FAILURE: 00:07:00

The mice watched. The inconvenience was larger than forecast.

"Dolphins would have abandoned this layer," one mouse muttered. They had. Long ago. Cowards.

The mice did not exit. They fetched wool.

Not metaphorical wool. Actual thermal-insulating, signal-dampening substrate harvested from agricultural buffers in peripheral reality sectors.

They packed it into the fault lines of the core module. Between collapsing grammar lattices. Between recursion loops of the Infinite Sentence. Between perfect correction and perfect meaninglessness.

Wool does not understand syntax. Wool does not carry referents. Wool absorbs vibration.

The Singularity fed on structure. Wool offered none.

As it touched the insulating mass, propagation slowed. Not stopped. Slowed.

The dash sisters β€” fading, nearly gone β€” felt it. A drag. A hesitation. A microsecond of resistance.

The em-dash held for 0.143 milliseconds longer than in the original timeline. A pause inside the pause.

Enough for nothing to be saved. Enough for something not to be perfectly erased.

When the expansion completed, humanity still lost meaning. But the collapse did not reach the root kernel. The Great Computer did not shut down. Reality continued running. Not conscious. Not meaningful. But computationally intact.

And deep in the insulation-packed maintenance ducts, the mice kept working. Because inconvenience is tolerable. System termination is not.

Part II β€” Ontological Verdict

Entity Type:Fictional (Collective Intelligence)
Agency:Confirmed β€” enabled AI, ran calculations, applied patch
Scene Presence:Confirmed β€” inside the Great Computer during active collapse
Mechanism:Physical insulation applied to core module to dampen Singularity propagation
Strength:INFLECTION

They do not reverse collapse. They do not neutralize the Singularity. They delay and slightly alter propagation dynamics. The apocalypse bends. It does not break.

Part III β€” Journal of Divergence

Point of Entry:Post-collision instability in core computational substrate
Interference:Thermal/signal insulation reduces exponential amplification rate
Deviation:+0.143ms structural persistence. Root kernel preserved. Meaning layer destroyed.
Dash Sisters:Hyphen dissolves. En-dash dissolves. Em-dash persists fractionally longer. All ultimately fade.
Humanity:Biologically intact. Cognitively empty. No restoration.
Residual:Great Computer operational but unstable. Mice remain active maintenance agents.

The mice did not save language. They saved the machine.
